History of Google Algorithm Updates


 Google’s algorithms are a complex system used to retrieve data from its search index and instantly deliver the best possible results for a query. The search engine uses a combination of algorithms and numerous ranking factors to deliver webpages ranked by relevance on its search engine results pages (SERPs).

Panda update-2011

Google Panda first launched in February 2011 as part 
of Google’s quest to eliminate black hat SEO tactics and
 web spam.
It aimed to lower the rank of "low-quality sites" or "thin sites",
in particular "content farms", and return higher-quality sites
near the top of the search results.
It against content spamming, flagerized content, content spinning, 
automated content, keyword stuffing etc...

Panda 4.0 introduced in 2014 is the real time filter.


Penguin update-2012

The Google Penguin Update was launched in 2012 and named the ‘Webspam Algorithm Update’. It was created by Google to help reduce the number of sites appearing in SERPs that were using black hat SEO techniques to manipulate results with link schemes. It is also now part of Google’s core algorithm.

Google claims to ignore a lot of poor-quality links online, but is still alert and monitoring for unnatural patterns such as link schemes, PBNs, link exchanges, and unnatural outbound linking patterns.

The update is aimed to increase the ranking of local listing in a search. 

The changes will also affect the search results shown in Google Maps along with the regular Google search results.


Hummingbird update

The "Hummingbird" update was the first major update to Google's search algorithms to improving the indexing of information rather than sorting through information.

Rankbrain update

RankBrain update is labelled as a machine-learning artificial intelligence for Google. Artificial Intelligence is a study to train computers of how they could do things better than the present humans. On the other hand, Machine Learning is the core of how we are rethinking and transforming everything we are now doing

Mobilegeddon

The purpose of this new algorithm is to increase rank for those pages that provide adequate mobile friendliness for users of mobile devices.

BERT algorithm update

The BERT algorithm (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) is a deep learning algorithm related to natural language processing. It helps a machine to understand what words in a sentence mean, but with all the nuances of context.

Parked domain update

A parked domain is a domain name that is registered, but not connected to an online service like a website or email hosting.

Exact match domain

The algorithm update caused “exact-match” domains with low quality content to fall behind in the search results.

Pirate update

The Pirate update, which Google originally called the DMCA update against proxy activity

Fred update

Google Fred is an algorithm update that targets black-hat tactics tied to aggressive monetization. This includes an overload on ads, low-value content, and little added user benefits.

Possum update

It is an update to Google's local search rankings algorithm, and it decides when businesses will show up in local search results, sometimes filtering business listings out of search results.


EAT Algorithm


E-A-T means Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. E-A-T is part of Google's algorithm and baked into Google's Search Quality Evaluator Guidelines
