How do search engines work?

Search engines work through three primary functions:
  • Crawling 
  • Indexing
  • Ranking

Crawling:  Process of analyzing a website in which google bot scan the website for finding new and                         updated contents.
    

Indexing :  process of understanding the content and filling it in proper place 

Ranking :  The position that your website is listed in google when a user searches that phrase or                                keyword

Today, search engine results pages — often referred to as “SERPs”

Search engine optimization is the process of improving the quality and quantity of website traffic  to a website or a web page from search engines. SEO targets unpaid traffic rather than  direct traffic or paid traffic. It aims to improve 
a websites position in SERP

Two Types Of Optimization :

  1. On page optimization
  2. Of page optimization
ON page optimization 

On page optimization refers to all activities that can be
done with in a website to make crawling more easy and
understandable in order to improve quality and quantity traffic and its position in search ranking.


OFF page optimization

Off page optimization refers to all activities that can be done outside the website in order to improve  its ranking in the SERP.




STRATAGIES OF SEO

Content specific : Content SEO refers to creating content that helps your web pages to rank high in the search engines. It includes everything to do with the writing and structuring of content on your website.
Every content SEO strategy should begin with keyword research, because you have to know what your audience is searching for if you want to generate traffic. Keyword research helps you to discover the terms you should be aiming to rank for.
If a keyword appeared on a page exactly as the user typed it, the page would have a high chance of ranking.
When people discovered they could rank their websites for more queries by repeating different variations of keywords on a page, it led to the technique known as keyword stuffing.

Link specific :

Building links is one of the many tactics used in search engine optimization (SEO) because links are a signal to Google that your site is a quality resource worthy of citation. Therefore, sites with more backlinks tend to earn higher rankings. There's a right way and a wrong way, however, to build links to your site.
  
When people began to learn about the power of links, they began manipulating them for their benefit. They'd find ways to gain artificial links just to increase their search engine rankings. While these dangerous tactics can sometimes work, they are against Google's terms of sespecific

Quality link specific:

Another factor taken into account is the quality of the page that is sending the link; search engines allow links from high-quality, trusted pages to count more in boosting rankings than questionable pages and sites.

Google introduced a term called 'Quality score'. Google gave quality score to each website to make quality link specific and it is called page rank. Its value range from 0-10 page rank = 10 means its trustful website. If your website gets a recommendations from a website having a high page rank value. It will improve the ranking of your website
 
Google introduced another term called "passing the juice". An authority power is given to our website by google.when sharing links from our website to multiple website, the authority power will decrease as a result which affects the ranking of our website. But it will be benefit for the other website where the links are shared. The ranking of their website will improve. In order to avoid this problem there introduced an attribute rel=nofollow

Bounce Rate

A bounce rate is the amount of visitors to any given website who navigate off of the site after viewing only one page, typically expressed as a percentage


Pogo sticking 

 Pogo sticking is when a search engine users visits several different search results in order to find a result that satisfies their search query.

Dwell Time

Dwell time is the length of time a person spends looking at a webpage after they've clicked a link on a SERP page, but before clicking back to the SERP results

 Dwell Time is the amount of time a user spends on a page. Pogo Sticking is extremely low Dwell Time on a page. Bounce Rate can both be extremely low Dwell Time as well as very high Dwell Time
